December 17, 2009    The Calgary Patriots wrapped up a very successful Fall campaign with meets in Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary.  The past two weekends were characterized by fast swimming, excellent relays and numerous new qualifiers.   Leading the qualification parade were Lei Lopez and Ola Salami who both qualified for Canadian Nationals in the 50 back.  New Western Canadian Champ qualifiers include Reece Tso (100 back), Colton Erismann (50 fly), Greg Ross (50 free, 100 free, 200 back) and Abi Clarke (50 free, 50 breast).  Lauren Crone (200 back) and Evan McDougall (1500 free) added their names to the growing list of swimmers qualified for AG Nationals this summer in Winnipeg.  Cam Fowler represented Team Alberta at the Youth Cup in Toronto placed second in the 1500 free, and fifth in both the 400 and 800 free.  On the provincial front Nicholas Johnstone (100 breast), Louise Neave (100 & 200 back), Andrew Oucharek (200 back) and Scout Sackley (1500 free) all booked their place at AG Provincials in March.  Impressive performances were posted by both Duco Schuurman Hess and Ella Milloy as both swimmers added to their AG Provincial qualifying times (Ella +3 & Duco +4).  The Patriots bolstered our AG Trials numbers to 25 as Hannah Anderson, Julien Barre, Emily Clark, Quinn Gilmour, Cole Palashiuk and Merel Schuurman Hess all achieved a meet qualifying time (MQT) in either the 400 free or 200 IM.  In all competitions a total of six Club Records were set.  Edwina Chih broke a 17 year old record in the 200 fly (2:34.35).  Cam Fowler took out another two old records improving the 13 & 14 boys 800 free record from 1990 to 8:59.57 and the 1500 free from 1987 to 16:59.57.  Ola Salami bettered the 15-17 girls 50 back record (29.73) and Shane Downey improved both the 15-17  50 and 100 back records (26.64 & 56.69).

 

November 21, 2009      The Calgary Patriots hosted the first installment of their Team Championships at the Talisman Centre.  117 swimmers attended the competition and raced in two of four 100 meter races. Amy Heinrichs and Justine Foster led the way in the 11 and under girls division with 2 wins a piece. Alexandre Le Blanc was the top 11 and under boy with wins in the 100 free and 100 fly.  Cameron Fowler and Jessica Warner were the stars of the 12-14 division winning two races each.  Olivia mastered the senior girls division with wins in the 100 free and 100 breast while Shane Downey was top senior boy winning the 100 breast and placing second in the 100 fly.  After the first meet Team Black leads Team Red by 122 points (Team Black 1393, Team Red 1271).  The series of Team Championship meets continues on December 18.
